VILNIUS, LT – In 2019, the healthy snacks market in Eastern Europe reached over USD 5 billion in retail sales, with Russian consumers showing a rising interest in nutritional food value, according to global market research company Euromonitor International.

According to Euromonitor’s Consumer Lifestyles Survey 2020, at least 50% of Russian respondents claimed actively controlling their diet and trying to reduce weight, due to increased pressure from emerging healthy lifestyle trends to eat and live more healthily. As a result, consumers are slowly changing their eating habits, moving away from (reduced) sugar and fat products to more wholesome and natural foods, while being more active.

To respond to this growing trend, Russian retailers, such as Perekrestok and Globus, adapted their stores, introducing organic shelves offering natural healthy snack options. New sales concepts, like SnackSy, also arise offering healthy snack subscription boxes.

In recent years, manufacturers started reformulating numerous snacks in Russia, and globally, to adapt to the demand. The introduction of new processing methods alongside the reduction of the number of ingredients and calories used in snacks helped build consumers’ trust.

“Healthy snacking is a fairly new trend in Russia, and consumers still need to learn the benefits. Health concerns during the pandemic accentuated consumers awareness to more healthy alternatives, resulting in an interest in healthy snacks, especially products offering immunity support claims,” concludes Maryna Sheremet, research analyst at Euromonitor International.

By 2025, the healthy snack sales category is expected to reach USD 5.9 billion in Eastern Europe, a 15% growth from 2019.
