Soft drinks consumption is growing despite demand being confined to carbonates, bottled water, juice and energy drinks. 2023 saw new entrants and rising local production, driven by rising demand for affordable brands at a time of high inflation and a return to regular socialising.
2023 saw further development in Ghana’s soft drinks industry as the expansion of demand attracted the attention of numerous new entrants across various categories. In particular, local players are making their mark across industry at a time when domestic production is rising rapidly in response to growing demand, especially for more affordable brands in the midst of a period of economic hardship for many.
There is a fairly strong culture for consuming soft drinks in Ghana, although it is restricted to just a few core categories. The country’s hot weather makes soft drinks attractive to those looking for refreshment and an energy boost.
While Ghana’s economy continues to grow and develop due to positive long-term macroeconomic trends, recent years have seen increasing levels of financial hardship, especially among less affluent segments, and this has had an influence on soft drinks consumption habits. The COVID-19 pandemic dealt a heavy blow to Ghana’s economy, with growth having almost ground to a complete halt during 2020, before a partial recovery was seen over the course of 2021 and 2022.
Ghana’s road system is better developed than in many other parts of sub-Saharan Africa. However, the distribution of consumer goods across the country to more remote, rural areas remains problematic and time consuming as rural roads are still bad.
The forecast period is expected to see Ghana’s soft drinks industry record positive sales growth, although growth rates are likely to be fairly moderate as the adverse economic situation and, in particular, high inflation continue to put downwards pressure on consumer spending. However, it should be noted that is very unlikely that demand will expand beyond the current core categories of bottled water, juice, carbonates and, to a lesser extent, energy drinks.
