Consumer health is being shaped by rising prices, which is stimulating a change in consumer priorities in El Salvador in 2024. Lower cost options, especially in analgesics and digestive remedies, are benefiting, while preventive health categories, such as vitamins and dietary supplements have regained some popularity after losing ground in the immediate aftermath of the pandemic.
Consumer health in Honduras showed positive growth in 2024, although higher value sales growth was influenced by rising costs rather than increases in volume sales. Although inflation did not continue at the same pace as in previous years, prices have not decreased and have in fact continued to rise.
The Honduran economy showed moderate growth in 2023, according to figures from the Honduran Central Bank (BCH), GDP showed growth close to 3%, while the projection for the end of 2024 was 3.5%.
The winner of the Presidential elections in 2021, President Xiomara Castro, represents the first woman to assume this high office in Honduras. Her party, the Partido Libertad y Refundación (LIBRE), is known to be more left leaning and she campaigned on different issues intended to help the Honduran people.
Honduras is fortunate in that it is geographically close to the US and goods can be shipped quickly. There is also a frequent schedule for containers arriving in the country, albeit at higher than usual rates due to current market conditions.
OTC products are classified as free dispensing drugs and do not need to be sold via authorised pharmacies. However, these products must comply with the General Medicines Law and the General Regulation of the Law of Medications.
There is no specific coverage in the General Medicines Law for vitamins and dietary supplements. As such, these products must adhere to the regulations used for OTC.
It is expected that over the forecast period, a large proportion of Hondurans will continue to face income constraints. This factor, in turn, is expected to be reflected in moderated purchasing behaviour in relation to consumer health products.
