In South Africa, the illegal importing of popular brands is a prevalent issue. Counterfeit items are often able to enter the country and surpass many regulations, making them highly accessible to local consumers where they are sold in both online and offline platforms.
Many South Africans are likely to remain under financial pressure over the early part of the forecast period, forcing them to reduce their discretionary spending. Therefore, for price-sensitive consumers, promotions, discounts and seasonal sales will remain attractive when they require footwear, in addition to value brands from the likes of Mr Price when they seek more affordable options.
Despite many brands expanding their omnichannel strategies, the majority of footwear sales are dominated by retail offline. Local consumers like to visit physical stores such as apparel and footwear specialists to first try on different styles and ensure the correct size and fit before making a purchasing decision.
