While the expectation is for a poor performance for jewellery in Thailand in 2023, the category is expected to rebound over the next five years, with full recovery to the pre-pandemic level expected in current value terms in 2026, although in volume terms full recovery is not expected even by the end of the forecast period. Over the forecast period, jewellery is expected to grow at a double-digit CAGR in current value terms, and in the low single digits in retail volume terms, with sales of both fine and costume jewellery expected to be optimistic.
Retail offline continues to be the overwhelmingly dominant channel when consumers make purchases of fine jewellery, due to higher purchase certainty and less delivery-related hassles. Even so, the efficacy of online communication and retail e-commerce should not be disregarded, especially given that close to 30% of Thai consumers use online information sources such as brand/company website, brand/company social media accounts, and blogger/social media influencer reviews to support their purchasing decisions, according to Euromonitor International’s Voice of the Consumer: Lifestyles survey in 2023.
While the presence of lab-grown diamonds has grown in Thailand in recent years, sales remain niche. While not many consumers are aware of its presence and benefits to the environment, lab-grown diamond jewellery is expected to gradually enjoy higher penetration in the category over the forecast period.
