The rise of eco-conscious consumerism in Ecuador is expected to have a huge impact on demand for bottled water during the forecast period, specifically in terms of the rising numbers of local people who aim to reduce their engagement with single-use plastic packaging. This shift in consumer preferences is expected to continue presenting major challenges to bottled water brands and their packaging partners, forcing them to adopt a more innovative approach to their packaging operations, while offering opportunities for companies that are prepared to take their commitment to sustainability seriously.
The forecast period is expected to see the emergence of a significant trend across the entire soft drinks industry as huge numbers of local consumers migrate to bottled water from other categories of soft drinks, driven by a resolute intention to reduce their intake of products that contain artificial colourants, high sugar levels and/or artificial sweeteners. This phenomenon can be seen as a signifier of a profound shift towards more health-conscious choices among the local population and growing demand for cleaner, more transparent beverage options.
Functional bottled water remains a relatively untapped category of soft drinks in Ecuador and while this situation is expected to remain in effect during the forecast period, the recent entry of new players is likely to facilitate the development of the category as key players achieve stronger penetration. Previously, Powerade had introduced its Power Water variant, marking the sports drinks brand’s entry into the category.

Bulk bottled water is split out separately. It is defined as packaged drinking water – purified, spring or mineral – that is packaged in a container of 8 litres or larger. The bulk bottled water data types apply to Still Bottled Water and Carbonated Bottled Water but do not apply to functional or flavoured bottled water. Bulk water is classified according to the new Bulk retail volume and Bulk retail value data type regardless of channel of sale: bulk water sold via retail locations and bulk water delivered direct to a consumer’s home is included. Bulk water sold to institutions (offices, schools etc.) remains excluded.
