As noted, generic medicines are popular in Peru, and a major reason is their cheaper prices compared to big brand names – especially in the inflationary context. However, as the economy recovers and inflation levels stabilise over the forecast period, we expect this to support stronger growth in the big brand names.
The use of acetaminophen (paracetamol) and ibuprofen to treat pain and inflammation is well established, thanks to offering consumers rapid efficacy in a readily available, low-priced pill. As such, this leaves little room for other styles of analgesics.
There has been a debate about distribution channels for OTC products in Peru for some years and, at the end of 2021, a legislative project was proposed in Congress that would allow the sale of OTC products in any commercial establishment. Prior to this, the only places authorised to sell medicines were pharmacies – except in specific cases (such as seen with sports nutrition and weight management products).
