While the overall outlook for eye care in Spain is positive, the economic situation in the country could slow growth rates over the early part of the forecast period. With shrinking disposable incomes, Spaniards are likely to prioritise their expenditure wherever possible.
As consumers return to pre-pandemic habits, including spending greater time outside of the home for work or socialising, they are likely to wear contact lenses more frequently, compared to the pandemic years of home seclusion when they were more likely to rely on spectacles. According to the data published in 2022 by Libro Blanco de la Salud Visual (a survey carried out by the National Association of Opticians) figures show that a growing number of consumers are using contact lenses.
While Spain’s ageing population is likely to increase the incidence of dry eyes and other eye ailments, thereby supporting demand for eye care in the coming years, another target audience is emerging. According to local studies, including one conducted by non-profit organisation Fundación Crecer Jugando, Spanish children are spending more than one hour in front of digital screens on a daily basis, although this was likely to have been higher during the pandemic due to online learning measures, and greater time spent at home, generally leading to a rise in demand for entertainment, including gaming or television.
