The forecast period is expected to see greater diversity in the range of products on offer in sauces, dips and condiments as the category’s leading players innovate in response to emerging consumer preferences. As the population of Ukraine becomes more exposed to a wider range of cuisine around the world via social media and the broadcast media, they are becoming increasingly interested in new, more exotic tastes and this is set to motivate leading players across numerous categories of sauces, dips and condiments to launch wider ranges of products that respond to this demand for a wider range of products.
Over the forecast period, it is unlikely that particularly dynamic retail volume growth will be seen in either of the two most popular categories of table sauces: ketchup and mayonnaise. While these are undoubtedly popular products among the Ukrainian population, demand is already very mature after many years of strong and steady growth in demand for these two most ubiquitous types of table sauces.
One factor that has so far undermined demand for table sauces, especially mustard, mayonnaise and ketchup, since the early days of the Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine is that the spectre of war has led to a huge decline in the numbers of local people spending their free time hosting social gatherings such as picnics and barbecues, a trend that is also tied to the dramatic decline seen in domestic tourism flows over the course of 2022 and 2023. In addition to the substantial decreases seen in disposable income levels due to the major interruptions to commercial activity that have flowed from armed conflict in Ukraine, most local people feel that they would not be able to justify any kind of celebration or frivolous leisure activity at a time when so many people are suffering so much as a result of the war, especially at a time of conscription and martial law.
