The Malaysian government has introduced new tax charges ranging from 6% to 8% for entertainment outlets like karaoke bars, night clubs and dance halls which became effective from 1 March 2024. These new taxes could discourage consumers from visiting these venues to consume spirits, placing a further obstacle to the recovery of spirits.
The new policy introduced by Malaysian government in December 2023 to allow tourists from China and India to visit the country without a visa pass is predicted to boost sales of some spirits in the on-trade as tourists mostly dine in at restaurants. China and India are the fourth and fifth largest source markets for tourists in Malaysia and this move should help to attract even more visitors.
The new shopping malls that opened in December 2023 such as The Exchange Mall and Pavilion Damansara Heights should also help to boost on-trade sales of spirits in 2024. Alongside retail outlets these shopping malls are also home to new restaurants and bars (eg Amazonas, Busaba, Elementary and more) many of which offer cocktails, using rum, gin, vodka, and whiskies, among other spirits, to create signature drinks.
