The forecast period is expected to see the leading domestic producers of edible oils in Sweden continue to make the most of their domestic origins as local consumers continue to prioritise locally manufactured products. Emphasising local origins is tantamount to emphasising high quality, ethical farming methods and ecological credentials as many local consumers are well aware that Sweden’s agribusiness sector is a regional and global leader in these areas.
Over the forecast period, private label is expected to gain ground in edible oils in Sweden and this can be seen as the result of high inflation and downwards pressure on disposable income levels. With the cost of living having risen considerably since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, the impact of the Ukraine conflict on the global supply of sunflower oil and the influence of drought in southern Europe on olive oil production have made edible oils considerably more expensive.
Edible oils is when is set to remain a category that revolves around two poles: on the one hand, it is a category in which products are seen as essential staples, which means that value for money is a primary consideration for many consumers; on the other hand, category players are increasingly taking the opportunity to add value to make their products stand out on retail shelves and offer consumers something interesting and different. For this reason, the selection of edible oils available in Sweden is already very wide, including sesame oil, linen oil and avocado oil, and there are expectations that the range will become even wider during the forecast period as demand diversifies on the back of strong communications campaigns from category players.
