Edible oils, particularly sunflower and corn oil, are considered staples by most consumers, and as such, sustained economic growth should ensure that total retail sales continue to increase over the forecast period. Moreover, many Saudis are shifting towards using oil, including olive and canola (rapeseed) varieties, in cooking, instead of butter, thanks to a growing awareness of the harmful effects of saturated fats.
Saudi Vegetable Oil & Ghee Co (SAVOLA) is expected to maintain its leading position within edible oils during the forecast period. This is not only due to the loyalty of its customers but also its ability to respond efficiently to the dynamics of the local market.
While Saudi Arabia’s economic recovery is expected to accelerate in the short term, it may take some time for the government’s Saudisation policy and Vision 2030 programme to translate into significant improvements in purchasing power for consumers. This should ensure private label products that retail at substantially lower prices than branded alternatives continue to gain ground in edible oils.
