Connected to the trend of soup manufacturers providing smaller portion formats, to suit single servings, we are seeing a similar trend in ready meals, particularly those in the fresh or chilled formats. These are often produced by private label companies, directly for supermarkets, and tend to be from smaller local manufacturers who have been able to show more flexibility on prices than larger national companies.
Packaging for ready meals continues to become more environmentally friendly, with glass jars becoming a popular choice – for example as seen with products from player Société Raynal et Roquelaure SA. Glass is seen as an eco-friendly option as it is easy and straightforward to recycle, however, glass prices have been rising and, thus, adds to the cost of creating such products.
The best-performing meal kits continue to see growth in France, with more new names expected to join the leading private label Quitoque (from Carrefour SA), which holds over half of all brand shares, along with second-placed HelloFresh (HelloFresh France SAS), being the only other brand holding double-digit shares. Regarding the leading brand, Quitoque announced a partnership with top TV chef Philippe Etchebest, who is working with the company on recipes throughout 2023.

This is the aggregation of ready meals, pizza, food kits, prepared salads, and soup. Includes: These are products that have had recipe 'skills' added to them by the manufacturer, resulting in a high degree of readiness, completion and convenience. Food kits is an exception where typically the extent of preparation is much shorter than other meal products; includes meal kits where consumers are to put together pre-portioned ingredients and cook with the guidance of recipe cards. Ready meals are generally accepted to be complete meals that require few or no extra ingredients. However, in the case of shelf stable ready meals, the term also encompasses meal 'centres’; for food kits, they do require a degree of cooking and preparation. As such, some meals may require cooking (ready-to-cook); others may simply need reheating, prior to serving (ready-to-eat). Excludes: Any products sold unpackaged and/or by weight, including food sold from a retail deli counter.
