While Spanish consumers’ disposable incomes are likely to remain under pressure heading into the forecast period due to elevated inflation and increasing interest rates, demand for sports nutrition is set to offer further growth opportunities in the coming years. In fact, demand for all areas of the category is expected to fully recover to pre-pandemic levels following drastic declines in 2020.
Sports nutrition faces increased competition from packaged food, where manufacturers are increasingly supplementing their offerings with protein. This is particularly the case for dairy products marketed by the likes of Danone and Nestlé.
Protein/energy bars is set to gain further share within sport nutrition in Spain over the forecast period, as it increasingly becomes a popular healthy snack. This format is more accessible to a wider audience beyond sports or gym enthusiasts compared to sports protein powder for instance, and benefits from expanding distribution in supermarkets through placement at points of sales, thereby driving up impulse purchases for on-the-go consumption for those requiring a filling and nutritious snack.

Sports Nutrition
These nutritional products improve physical endurance, increasing muscle growth/development/mass, or speeding recovery after exercise. Sports nutrition is targeted at serious athletes and gym-goers, and their principal purpose is to build muscle and to boost energy. Sports Nutrition tracks two types of products: Protein and Non-Protein. Sports protein include bars, powder and ready-to-drink (RTD) offerings. Sports Non-Protein include products that do not have protein as its core ingredient. They can be used to repair muscle or as energy/endurance booster. Note: Mainstream sports nutrition products such as sports drinks (e.g. Gatorade) or energy drinks (e.g. Red Bull) are not included here. Energy and sports drinks are tracked in the Soft Drinks system.
