The forecast period is expected to see demand for jams and preserves remain under pressure in Ukraine and this is largely a reflection of the high inflation that has flowed from the depreciating exchange value of the hryvnia and the substantial pressure that has come on household incomes as a result of armed conflict. Jams and preserves are products that are rarely seen as essential and, moreover there are many opportunities for consumers to save money on jams and preserves by either purchasing the artisanal jams and preserves that are available at lower prices via informal channels or, preferably, making jams and preserves at home from scratch using fresh fruit.
Chocolate spreads is expected to continue recording positive growth over the forecast period as sales recover from the declines recorded during the early stages of the Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine during 2022. However, it is expected that less expensive brands will benefit the most from rising demand as the much lower prices that they charge for their chocolate spreads are expected to give them a huge advantage over the most popular imported brands of chocolate spreads: Nutella by Ferrero and Milka by Mondelez.
Nut and seed based spreads is set to remain a niche category of sweet spreads in Ukraine throughout the forecast period and the relatively low sales of these products in the country can be attributed mainly to the category’s relatively high average unit price. With even basic products such as peanut butter regarded as prohibitively expensive by the majority of Ukrainian consumers, further development in demand among mass consumers is likely to be driven by brands that are focused on making their products more affordable.
